From Humble beginnings
to historical legend

When the McClellan Clan opened Burnside Ice Co. back in 1911, they had no way of knowing that it would evolve into one of the pioneer breweries in New England. In their early days, they produced and distributed the cleanest ice around, using water directly sourced from a pond on Goodwin Street. When the original facility burnt down in 1930, Burnside Ice Co. rose from the ashes and created the beautiful brick building on Tolland Street that we know today.

In the 1960’s, they needed a solution to cool off their new ice machinery, so they drilled a deep well and used water straight from the source. It wasn’t until thirty years later that they realized this water source was a secret gold mine. In the early 90’s they installed a water system that included three self-serve spigots in the front of the building for people to enjoy at a very low cost. This led them to develop friendships with some local home brewers who informed them that the unique elements of their well water were perfect for brewing beer. It was in this moment that the light bulb went off for the McClellans – and as they say – the rest is history.

Old Burnside Brewing Company officially opened in November 2000. They brewed delightful beers, deeply rooted in their Scottish heritage. Ten Penny Ale became a staple for liquor stores and bars across Connecticut, and eventually spread throughout most of New England as the craft beer world began to flourish. To many, Ten Penny was their first craft beer, welcoming them into the exciting community that we have grown to love. So, when Old Burnside closed its doors a few years ago, we knew we couldn’t let Ten Penny be forgotten.

Fast forward to November 2020, and Ten Penny Ale is reborn as East Hartford Brewing. Still located at 776 Tolland Street, we look forward to welcoming back old friends and meeting new faces. We are excited to grow off the rich history and roots of our predecessors. As we expand, we will continue to pay our respects to Old Burnside, be it through reviving old favorites or paying tribute through design. We welcome you to come down to the brewery and join us for some good times and even better beers.

Cheers to new beginnings for us all!
